#WeAreAllTheFaceofBreastCancer This October

In Her Own Words…

I am a breast cancer survivor. I was diagnosed with breast cancer on 12/14/2012 at the age of 33. At the time I had two very young boys, ages 5 and a baby still in diapers. I opted for a bilateral mastectomy, followed by chemotherapy and oophorectomy, and attempted breast reconstruction.  However, due to an infection that nearly killed me I had both breast expanders removed and decided to go “flat”. Initially, I was devastated I wasn’t sure how I would move forward and still feel feminine, sexy, and thrive. I was asked by a local mammography studio to model as they were in the process of redoing their studio. They would be using pictures of women from the neck to the torso and would show all different types of surgical options. I agreed to do the shoot as long as I could show my face.  I wanted other women to see that breast cancer wasn’t an “old lady” disease but an any age issue.  I also wanted people to see that being flat can be a viable option AND a beautiful one. After the photoshoot, I posted the picture and the response was overwhelming. I was one of the first women to share my mastectomy scars with a public audience and since it has gained traction.  I am a HUGE advocate for positive body image.  My photos have been shared internationally.

What has been the most challenging part of your journey?

I would say the most challenging part of my breast cancer journey has been learning to love my body post trauma (cancer).  Once I was able to learn to love my scars I knew I could rock the hell out of my flat chest.

What one thing you want all breast cancer patients to know?

One thing I would love to tell all breast cancer patients is that this is your body…..you get to decide what kind of surgery YOU want.  Do want makes YOU comfortable not what makes everyone else comfortable.

What is your superpower?

I think my superpower is to always find the silver lining in things.  My mom always says I was born with the happy gene, lol.

What is your theme song?
What is your favorite movie?

What is your go-to snack?

My go to snack would have to be fruit, I LOVE all fruits and most veggies.

What your spirit animal?

My spirit animal is a butterfly

What is your favorite food?

My favorite food is caesar salad with grilled shrimp

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I would LOVE to go to Alaska.  I love being out in nature.  I feel most recharged when I can hike and be outside.

I laugh at them because they are all the same.”

Love Research Army

We combat the disparities that exist in research by challenging the scientific community to launch studies that are as inclusive and diverse as the people that breast cancer affects.
