The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of a mobile health-related app on cancer patients’ symptoms.
What does participation involve?
If you decide to take part in this study, you will be randomly assigned to one of three groups that will engage in either mindfulness-based activities using an app called Calm, or health education activities through a podcast app. The study lasts a total of 12 weeks. You will be asked to download an app and log in using the credentials that will give you free access. You will be asked to use the app for at least 10 minutes per day (about 70 minutes/week) for eight weeks. You will also be asked to maintain a daily sleep diary during the eight weeks you are using the app and one additional week after you have stopped using it. You will be asked to complete a total of four online questionnaires during the 12 weeks you are enrolled in the study. The questionnaires will ask about your physical and mental health, quality of sleep, quality of life, mindfulness in day-to-day experiences, social well-being, physical activity, sedentary behaviors, and study satisfaction. Each questionnaire should take you approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.
Qualifying and enrolled participants will receive free access to the app while they are participating in the study and can earn up to $40.
Participants will be asked to contribute to this study for a maximum of 20 years. The questionnaire data may be sent to other academic institutions for additional studies on genetic cancers. The data shared with other institutions will not include any identifiable data, keeping your responses anonymous. Data from the questionnaire will not be used for purposes other than the study of familial cancer.

You can sign up for this study if you match all of these main criteria. Please read this list carefully.
- You are at least 18 years old
- You have been diagnosed with any stage of cancer within the past 2 years
- You self-identify as sleep disturbed
- You do not currently use any smartphone-based applications for mindfulness and/or meditation
- You have not practiced any type of meditation or mindfulness techniques (i.e. yoga, tai chi, qigong) for greater than or equal to 60 minutes per month, in the past six months
- You do not experience sleep-disordered breathing and/or do not have a sleep movement disorder
- You own a mobile smartphone and are willing to download an app
- You are able to read and understand English
- You live in the United States
