Meet Doretha “Dee” Burrell. It was 10 years ago that Dee was diagnosed with breast cancer. An announcement that came as a bit of a surprise because Dee was no stranger to getting annual mammograms. This particular year, Dee’s doctors found and diagnosed her with an aggressive Stage 2 breast cancer. She learned of Dr. Love’s Breast Book and relied heavily on the book for information about breast cancer. “The information was clear and concise, I love Dr. Love’s ability to explain mutated cells in the anatomy of the human breast for the lay person.” Dee did not let breast cancer slow her down, it actually sparked a vigor in her to pick-up and re-claim her independence. She is a wife, mother, and grandmother that defies the notion that age or circumstances can stop or slow her down. As she became stronger, Dee would informally share information from Dr. Love’s Breast Book to help others. Dee’s informal talks have evolved into formal speaking engagements throughout Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia, and nationwide. During each speaking engagement, Dee shares her breast cancer experience and Dr. Love’s Breast Book with audiences of women of color. She is also advocating for the Army of Women® by encouraging audience members to sign-up to take an active role in breast cancer research. Thank You Dee! We are proud to have Dee in our community of advocates and supporters. Dr. Susan Love Foundation for Breast Cancer Research acknowledges Dee as a Thriver!
